A preparation guide
Prepare product details for a spec sheet
Before creating a sheet, gather the product identity and a short, factual summary. A consistent starting point makes details easier to review and reuse.
Five details to organize
Product name
Use the name customers recognize. Keep the product or family name distinct from a model, finish, size, or other variation.
Manufacturer
Record the manufacturer name as it appears in current company or product materials. If a supplier and manufacturer are different, label each role clearly.
Model or SKU
Copy the identifier exactly, including punctuation and variant suffixes. Check whether each size, voltage, color, or configuration has its own identifier.
Category
Choose the category a buyer or teammate would look for first. Keep category wording consistent across related products, and add a secondary category only when it helps distinguish the item.
Summary
Write two or three short, factual sentences covering what the product is, who or what it is for, and its main use or distinguishing feature. Keep precise measurements in their own fields.
